In the design process, homeowners are focused on the layout of the floor plan and the general measurements. Homeowners want to see that their design concepts are being accurately understood and re-created in the project drawings. There is so much more to drawings than the floor plan. When technical details that a contractor needs are not included in the drawings, there is a domino effect that begins during the planning and continues on through construction. At a minimum, the following details must be included in your project drawings:
1. Existing to remodeled floor plan (for remodel only)
2. Concrete and all framing (including roof layout)
3. Window and door schedule
4. Plumbing and electrical layouts
5. Details of all load-bearing points
6. Engineering stamps as needed
7. Elevations (cabinet details, etc.)
Making sure these details are on your drawings will help your contractor to produce a more accurate cost estimate to build your project and eliminates guesswork and saves time in tracking down the necessary information later.
