One of the most frequently asked questions we get at Schweitzer Design and Build is, “How long will it take to build our new custom home, and when can we expect to move in?” It’s a great question.
We understand that, as a client, you have a timeline in your head, a vision of moving into your dream home, and what it will be like to finally pull into the driveway of the home that was built just for you.
Inside the house, there are no contractors. All the work is done – the carpentry is complete; the painting is finished. Your dream home is ready for you and your family. Now you can welcome your friends into it and spend time enjoying life in your new custom home or completed remodel.
When people ask us “How long should we plan on the build to take?” we respond by saying, “As long as you plan to live there.” For example, the timeline for a new build may-be six months, but you’ll be enjoying your custom home or remodel for decades. So, once a custom homebuilder knows your family’s goals, one of the questions that you, the client, should always ask is: “How much time do I want to invest in planning my new home?”
Every client thinks of their home in terms of its architectural layout, interior design, the materials, and kitchen plan. These things are important, but the more time you spend planning how you want your home to match your desired lifestyle – and how it will complement this lifestyle – the happier you’ll ultimately be with the home. What is important to you, and are you planning for your future needs as well?
In our experience, the time you spend planning – not just the specifications, but how you want the home to serve your lifestyle – is the single greatest investment you can make to get what you want out of your custom home. We can’t emphasize this point enough: take the time to plan and make sure all the specifications of your custom home align not only with your budget but with your lifestyle. Often we see customers who have a spec sheet of what they want their house to be, and as we learn more about the customer and about how they see themselves living over the next five to 20 years, we realize that while some of the impressive design features they want would complement the home, they wouldn’t actually complement the owners’ lifestyle.
As custom home builders and remodelers, our focus is not only on building the home you want today, but ensuring you’ll still want to live in it in 5, 10 and 20 years from now. We want you to know that we want to help you create a house that fits not only your budget but your lifestyle as well.
