Oregon Coast Day Trips
The Oregon Coast is barely an hour west of Corvallis along scenic Route 20. Driving there to the coast range is a gorgeous trip in itself, then you end up in Newport, Oregon on the coast. From there, you can go north or south to any number of possible Oregon Coast day trips. Here are a few favorites:
Newport’s Historic Bayfront
Lined with unique shops and restaurants (including the original Mo's), there's plenty to see here. Check out the “stag party” of male sea lions lounging and barking on the docks during most of the year.
Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area
A scenic lighthouse (lighting the way since 1873) overlooks colonies of nesting seabirds and a “Cobble Beach” with spectacular tide pools you can see at low tide.
Oregon Coast Aquarium & The Marine Science Center
The Oregon Coast Aquarium has a host of exhibits displaying tide pool creatures and fish that live under the waves off the coast, including sharks! The OSU-affiliated Hatfield Marine Science Center has great learning resources about coastal creatures, geology and climate.
Waterfalls Near Corvallis
Like amazing beaches, Oregon has almost too many gorgeous waterfalls to name. Here's a few favorites that make good day trips:
Alsea Falls
About 45 minutes southwest of Corvallis, the hike takes you through a gorgeous forest landscape to the falls. You could spend all day exploring here, and many do!
Silver Falls State Park
About 70 miles northeast of Corvallis, this gem hosts a collection of waterfalls you can hike around and behind! There are long and short hikes to choose from.
Toketee Falls
On the way to Crater Lake National Park (a stunning day trip in itself), you should definitely stop here. It’s about 3 hours southeast, and it’s a gorgeous, easy hike.
Multnomah Falls
Plan on between 2 and 3 hours to get to the start of your day trip to Multnomah Falls, east of Portland on I-84. You’ll need to plan ahead to visit during less crowded times. Check out parking areas further away that provide fee-based shuttle services so that you don’t have to worry about parking once you get there.
Weekend Trips from Portland to Corvallis
There are numerous day trips between Corvallis and Portland to suit anyone’s fancy. This list only scratches the surface:
The Cascades
For skiing, hiking, camping and otherwise adventuring in nature, check out Mt. Hood, Mt. Jefferson, Mt. Bachelor and the Three Sisters, and everything in between.
Wine Tasting, Beer Tasting
We have some great vineyards right around Corvallis, but between here and Portland, there are scores more to check out, all with their own character and flavors to savor!

Ever wondered what happened to Howard Hughes’ Spruce Goose? It’s just off of 99W outside of McMinnville, about an hour north of Corvallis.
